16.FAREWELL KING: A bloated-looking Elvis performs in Rhode Island three months before his death in 1977.
The last months of Elvis's life were a blur of tours punctuated by increasing health problems.
As friend and backup singer Joe Moscheo recalled to PEOPLE in August 1987: "The last time I saw (Elvis) was at a concert in Huntsville, Ala. I went to the hotel afterward to see him and talked to him for about a half-hour. He was jaundiced-looking -- yellow and overweight. He wasn't taking care of himself, and he was up to about 225 lbs. He was like a different guy. There was no fight left, no spark. He said a lot of things were happening, but he said, 'I'm going to get it worked out.' Then he gave me a little hug. Six months later I played piano for one of the quartets that sang at his funeral."
The one bright spot for him during this period was meeting and beginning a relationship with then-20-year-old model Ginger Alden, who bore a resemblance to Priscilla. "He taught me a great deal, emotionally and spiritually," Alden, who was engaged to Elvis, told PEOPLE in August 1997. "He said he felt we were soul mates. I felt the same." Ultimately, Alden would find Elvis's body the night he died.
