5.CAPTURED ON FILM: Elvis's third movie, Jailhouse Rock, premieres in Memphis in October 1957.
Elvis made his movie debut in 1956 in Love Me Tender, playing a young Texas farmer who marries the girlfriend of his older brother, who he thinks was killed in the Civil War but wasn't. Elvis sang four songs for the movie, including the famous title track. He went on to star in 30 more films, including 1958's King Creole, 1964's Viva Las Vegas and 1965's Paradise, Hawaiian Style, but he was not happy with the music-driven, mostly lighthearted movies.
As Joe Moscheo, a longtime Elvis backup singer, told PEOPLE in 1987, "It always hurt him that his movies were so bad. They always gave him those musicals, but if he could have gotten a good meaty role, he might have been an actor again, and he would have been big- name box office. If he had been happy, there's just no telling what he could have done."
"More than anything I want to be an actor," Elvis once said, LIFE noted in February 1995. "The kind that stays around for a long time."
