2.CLOSE-KNIT: In 1950, then-teenaged Elvis poses with mom Gladys and dad Vernon. During his childhood, Elvis was close with his family, including his aunts, uncles and cousins who lived nearby. But the person closest to him was Gladys Presley, his mother. "Gladys was the love of his life," ex-wife Priscilla Presley wrote, PEOPLE noted on the 20th anniversary of Elvis's death in August 1997. The two were so close that, during a private screening of his first movie, Love Me Tender, in 1956, "When the character that Elvis played was killed, Elvis's mother started crying," Loews Theater poster artist Saul Brown, who sat behind the Presleys at the screening, told PEOPLE in 1987. "And Elvis put his arm around her and said it was okay, he was right there with her."
